Winter mists

Taken last winter not 100 meters from our home. My wife noticed these beautiful mists early in the morning and I literally ran outside to take 3 or 4 photos.

The Rock

 Alcatraz Island, which houses a former military fort and prison, lies in the middle of San Francisco Bay. The photo was taken on the same boat ride as this photo of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The hikers

 My daughter, not yet three, with my wife behind her, look towards the Karavanke mountains in the background during a short walk up a hill in the vicinity of Ljubljana.

Watchtowers

 Lifeguard watchtowers stand empty in early november. This is along a long, sandy beach in the northern Italian town of Lido di Jesolo, just across the lagoon from Venice. Jesolo is one of the most popular beach resorts in Italy, but is quiet and empty outside of the main tourist season.

Peaks before the dark

 The last light in a narrow mountain valley, looking up at the peaks. The most prominent mountain here, on the left side of the photo, is Špik, whose name literally means "sharp"

Ginkgo

 A ginkgo tree, one of the last to drop its leaves in this quick shot taken at the arboretum of Volčji Potok early in November.

Fly agaric

 I took this in the fall of last year. I know very little about mushrooms, but from a quick on-line search, I think this is an Amanita persicina, a peach-colored fly agaric. If that's the case, it's of a species distinct of the more widely known Amanita muscaria (the classic red fly agaric).

Forest fern

 

I love ferns - they are plants that reproduce via spores and don't have seeds or flowers. This was taken in the forest behind our house during the fall, when the vegetation was yellowing and the early afternoon sun shining through a thinning canopy. The sun seemed to spotlight this specific fern, with most of the surrounding forest darker, and a fallen tree framed it nicely.

 Another late-summer sunset, taken during our last vacation, this one was during the first days of September. 

The harbour-bay was clear as glass,

Fire in the sky

 

Taken after sunset, looking off towards the west, late in the fall. Autumn and winter sunsets are the best - I imagine it's because of the low angle which the sun sets behind the horizon.

Taken last autumn on a walk among one of the hills to the east of Ljubljana, the low sun illuminates the mishmash of different trees with what I'm guessing is a lone farmhouse in the center.

Out of the fog

 

Went on a quarantine walk not far from home. The weather report suggested sun, but the fog lingered until we got back to the car. Honestly, I think walking through the fog had its own merits and I certainly didn't mind.

Through the clouds

 

I pulled over the side of the road amidst some fields not long ago to get this shot looking to the south-west over some low hills. It had been a wet and cloudy day and the sun just barelly managed to poke through the clouds here and there. This was a few days after the previous two photos here (the last light on the Karavanke and the clouds below).

Last rays on the Karavanke

Took this a couple of weeks ago - after a few days of rain the clouds started to part, just in time for the setting sun to light up the Karavanke mountains. The one on the left (towards the west) is Brana, on the right (partly obscured by clouds) is Planjava (whose west wall I climbed years ago), between them is the Kamnik saddle.
 

Breginjski kot

 

This snap of the valley Breginjski kot (Breginj Combe when translated to English) was taken during a bike ride from Kobarid towards the Nadiža river (taken with an iPhone). We spent a week long holiday camping near Kobarid and did quite a bit of light mountain biking.

Rainbow

Ran across a nice rainbow while out on a bike ride - this was around Lake Cerknica, looking towards the north. The photo was taken with an iPhone, pulled hastily from a pocket. I've ridden quite a bit in this area, both to the top of mount Slivnica (it's off shot to the left) and around the forests of Javornik Hills (behind us to the south). The first is nice but can be quite crowded (it's a favorite easy hiking destination), the second is kind of boring with no mountain bike paths, mainly just logging roads.

Warm light

I took this during the same airplane flight as my last post. The funny part is that I needed a half hour to find the exact location of this church - specifically, the church of St. Nikolaj. The airplane flew quite a bit farther than I remembered before doing our loop around Triglav.

Westward bridge

Took this photo recently in Novo Mesto, just a quick shot with my phone. The footbridge spans across the river Krka from the city itself to a small, forested hill on the opposite bank of the river. The old part of town is easily one of the nicest in Slovenia.

Lonely row boat

Around five years ago, taken a few hours before this photo of a little frog and these two photos of my sister. Lake Bohinj in the early hours of the morning, a lonely boat in a sea of fog.
