Elevador de Santa Justa

A photo of Lisbon's Santa Justa elevator. It connects the downtown of Lisbon (the Santa Justa street) with the Carmo square. Lisbon itself is said to be built on seven hills (as is Rome, but according to Wikipedia, so are quite a few other cities), and has a couple of steep funiculars that climb the slopes. This elevator is over one hundred years old, and started out being powered by steam.
